POST 5: Hiroshima prefecture and anime! (PART 1)

My name is Rony from Costa Rica. I'm a student at Hiroshima University and member of HSAA.

In this post I would like to speak about one of my passions: Japanese animation, also known as anime. Specifically, I would like to show you some of the series or movies that happen in Hiroshima or were inspired in some of its cities. This is a personal selection, so we can discuss other titles (your comments are welcome! 😊). Let’s start!

Hiroshima has been portrayed in numerous animes, covering stories about peace and the atomic bomb, fantasy, slice of life, science fiction and more. For this first part I have selected some of the most famous titles, including not only TV series but movies or short video films. Let’s go to the list!

manga (1973-1985) and two movies (1983 and 1986). This is possibly the most famous story on Hiroshima. It follows the story of Gen and his struggle during the war and specially after the dropping of the atomic bomb. The manga is read in schools of all Japan and widely known in many countries.

"Ponyo on the Cliff” (崖の上のポニョ)

Movie (2008). Created by the legendary Studio Ghibli (producer of films as “Princess Mononoke”, “Spirited Away” and “Howl's Moving Castle”). I was told that Hayao Miyazaki was frequent visitor of the small town of Tomonoura, which was used as inspiration for creating the world of Ponyo. Basically depicts an adorable version of the “Little Mermaid”.

short movie (1993). The story follows Yayoi, a young girl who works on a streetcar and centers on her life during and after the dropping of the bomb, as well as in the role played by streetcar on the destroyed city.

two anime television series, four anime films and one sequence of OVA (2010-2016). A peaceful story centered in the story of a girl interested in photography. It happens in the city of Takahara.

Well, this is the end of the first post on this topic. I hope you got interested on at least one of the titles.

As always, thank you for reading this post and... please wait for the next one! 😆

Your comments and questions will be welcome! See you! 😉

“Ponyo on the Cliff” (崖の上のポニョ, “Gaku no Ue no Ponyo”)

Sus comentarios y preguntas serán bienvenidas. ¡Nos “vemos” pronto! 😉
